How Does a Faraday Bag Work?

Simply put, Faraday bags work by blocking all signals to and from electronic devices once they’re in the closed bag.

The idea of Faraday bags came many years after an invention done by English scientist Michael Faraday. This was coined the Faraday cage.

Faraday discovered that an electrical conductor only exhibits electrical charges on its external surface. No effects were apparent in the interior of the conductor.

To demonstrate this, Faraday conducted an experiment in a theater. After making a 12-foot cube and lining up the “cage’s” interior with metal foil, he blasted the room with high-voltage discharges from an electrostatic generator.

While inside the cube, Faraday proved his hypothesis by using an electroscope, a device used to detect electrical charges. The electroscope could only detect external electric charges; none was detected in the cube’s interior.

Today, the concept of the Faraday cage is used in many industries and fields to shield against electromagnetic fields that may interfere with systems or harm people.

A good example of a form of a Faraday cage is your microwave. Another bigger example would be MRI scanners, which prevent external radio frequency signals from affecting diagnostic images and patient data. You can even create a makeshift Faraday cage with plastic and tin foil.

Consider a GoDark Faraday bag as a portable and stylish Faraday cage. The most basic Faraday bags block electromagnetic interference. This blocking is possible due to the signal-blocking materials used to produce the GoDark Faraday bags.

While your device is safely stored in a Faraday bag, all wireless signals from your phone as well as RFID (used in a key fob, a credit card, etc.) will be blocked.

Likewise, your information will be protected from potential data theft, and no one will be able to track your device’s location.

Effectively, this means that during the time any mobile device is stored in the bag, it won’t be able to send or receive:

  • Calls
  • SMS messages
  • App alerts
  • Location or other information

Faraday Cage vs. Faraday Bag—What Is the Difference?

A Faraday cage, sometimes called a Faraday shield, is an enclosure that blocks electromagnetic pulses. Its interior is made of grounded conductive material, like wire mesh or metal plates.

The original purpose of Faraday shields was to protect sensitive electronic equipment from external radio frequency signals. It also served as a protective shield for equipment and people against various external electric charges (lightning strikes and electrostatic discharges).

The Faraday cage has been used in various fields, especially where sensitive electronic systems and data are involved.

The way a Faraday cage works is simple.

A Faraday cage distributes the charge caused by external electromagnetic fields around the conductive material of the cage (located on the outside). This cancels the electric charges within the Faraday shield.

As a result, anything inside the Faraday cage’s interior is protected from all external electrical fields and electromagnetic waves.

Now, imagine the Faraday shield in the form of a pouch. What you get is a Faraday bag.

Why Is Having a GoDark Faraday Bag Important?

In this day and age, it’s almost impossible not to have your life intertwined with various mobile devices.

Whether for personal or business purposes, we use our phones, tablets, and laptops to organize our day-to-day life, such as managing our money, keeping track of necessary information, setting appointments, etc.

This means that all of our data, if not protected, is up for grabs by hackers, thieves, stalkers, and even government and other such agencies.

And that’s just the stuff we’re aware of is possible. Who knows what else is happening with our devices?

As such, it’s critical to take measures and protect ourselves, the people we care about, and our assets.

GoDark Faraday Bag used to protect your information

Perhaps you’ve read about other items that offer signal blocking, like an EMP bag or even Mylar bags. GoDark Faraday bags offer you this protection in a fashionable but discreet way, unlike an EMP bag or typical Mylar bags.

At GoDark Bags, our philosophy is simple:

You own your electronics, and you’re ultimately responsible for them; therefore you should have the ability to control when they transmit and receive electromagnetic signals.

Whether you have concerns regarding privacy, location tracking, or health or if you intend to protect your electronic devices from electromagnetic damage and external static, GoDark Bags has it covered—literally.

Who Needs a GoDark Faraday Bag?

Though anyone could benefit from the safety provided by the GoDark Faraday Bags, here are a few groups who might find it of particular value:

  • Journalists who are concerned about protecting their sources and exclusive stories and photographs
  • Stalking victims who want to protect routes and locations as well as personal info
  • Military personnel and law enforcement that needs to protect sensitive and confidential information
  • Preppers and survivalists aware of the possibility of solar flare electromagnetic pulse (EMP) or an EMP bomb attack that would destroy any electrical device in its way
  • Privacy-conscious citizens who travel or anyone who wants to protect their devices from information theft

Even if you don’t see yourself as a part of these groups, owning a GoDark Faraday Bag just makes sense.

You wouldn’t leave your front door unlocked or your car keys in the ignition in the middle of a crowded parking lot. You wouldn’t post pictures of your ID or bank cards online, would you?

Think of your devices and all the sensitive information (passwords, cryptocurrency wallets, images, etc.) stored in them—and how anyone with the basic know-how can access your device without any trouble.

Don’t wait. Get your GoDark Faraday Bag today and protect your privacy.

By placing your phone in the GoDark Bag, all incoming and outgoing signals will be blocked. You can easily test this by having someone try calling you, sending you a message, or tracking your phone using contact-tracing apps.

Here’s what others have found when using our bags:

Testimonial from Mike F.

Cindy B. says: “Quality product and peace of mind.”

Kenny A. says: “Great product. Shipped on time.”

Furthermore, the signal-blocking performance of the GoDark Faraday Bags has been thoroughly tested by an independent third-party lab.

Why Not Just Turn My Phone Off or Set It to Airplane Mode?

Turning off your phone is undoubtedly an option, and it will prevent phone tracking. However, it takes much longer to power up your phone if you need it to start snapping photos or to make an emergency call.

Even though turning off your phone should prevent tracking, there are some speculations that your phone is never really off. Every phone (Android or iPhone) has a different real-time operating system separate from the main phone OS.

For several years now, there have been reports of drones targeting individuals using information from their cell, even when the phone was off.

If your phone is tucked away in a GoDark Faraday Bag, this signal will be blocked, and your location would be hidden.

I’ll Just Set My Phone to Airplane Mode

Setting your phone to airplane mode will only prevent your phone from transmitting signals, but it won’t prevent it from receiving them. Furthermore, your phone will still record your location and send it out when you turn off airplane mode.

Using a GoDark Faraday Bag will prevent incoming GPS and cell signals used by your device to take note of and record your location.

Won’t I Get Tracked as Soon as I Pull My Phone Out?

Yes, when you take your phone out of the Faraday bag, it can be tracked and reached again. But all the locations you visited in the time your phone was secured in the bag will not be tracked or recorded.

The advantage of the Faraday bag is that you can then choose where and when you’ll take your phone out. This gives you the power to exercise selective privacy and the choice of allowing yourself to be tracked or not.
